Designed by Marks Barfield Architects, the London Eye was launched in 2000 to celebrate the millennium. At 135m, the Coca-Cola London Eye is the world’s largest cantilevered observation wheel and there are 32 capsules.

Originally, the Eye was intended as a temporary structure, able to be dismantled and transported to a new location, and had planning permission for five years. But with millions boarding it every year the lease was extended.

• The London Eye is the backdrop for London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks and therefore closes in the early afternoon.
